Bathtub Replacement

Bathtub replacement, and when refinishing makes more sense

Replacing a tub is rarely just the tub. An alcove tub is set into the wall, so the bottom rows of tile, the waterproofing and sometimes the valve trim come out with it.

If the tub is sound but stained, professional refinishing may be an option worth pricing. If it's cracked, leaking at the drain or simply the wrong size, replacement is usually the better long-term choice.

Old cast iron is heavy

Original cast iron tubs can weigh several hundred pounds. Removal often means breaking them up in place, and getting a new one up narrow stairs needs planning.

Material choices

Enameled steel, acrylic and new cast iron each feel and sound different and vary in weight and price. Ask about the floor structure if you're considering a heavy freestanding tub.

Freestanding tubs need space

A freestanding tub needs clearance on all sides for cleaning and a floor-mounted or wall-mounted filler. They look great in larger rooms but can crowd a small one.

Common questions

Can a tub be replaced without retiling?
Sometimes the bottom row can be removed and replaced, but matching old tile is hard. Many homeowners retile the surround at the same time.
