Worth knowing first
The decisions that shape a bathroom budget
Moving fixtures costs more than replacing them. Keeping the toilet, tub and sink in place reuses existing drains. Moving them means opening floors and often more permit work.
The waterproofing matters more than the tile. Grout isn't waterproof. Ask every contractor which system goes behind the shower walls and floor.
Older homes hide surprises. Many Chicago houses and two-flats have aging pipes or past repairs behind the plaster. Good estimates explain how those are handled.
